Is why you don’t sit with the car running for half an hour with the AC on full blast in 90+ degree heat.
Please note, the coolant on the ground is what came out of the overflow tank after we opened it.
Tomorrow we will be looking at the water pump and thermostat to see if either of them are fubar. Once the car cooled down to normal levels I drove it home without an issue. It could have just been a freak accident but we’re not taking any risks.
As for why I was sitting? Waiting for my brother and girlfriend to get done with band practice. I had the air on full blast because they were practicing outside and I wanted the car to be cool for them. This is what I get for being a good person!

You should probably replace that water pump now.

1/2 an hour? I get 5, 10 min, but dam.

_ Yes let’s idle a vehicle with known cooling system deficiencies for an incredibly long time, and why not put load on the engine as we do so?

It ran over. I left so it would be 10 minutes max. Yeah, 30 minutes later. -__-

I was supposed to sit there for 10 minutes max. They ran over. I didn't even think about it.

And this kids...
Is why cooling systems on BMW’s should always be looked after.
Preventively changing it>replacing it when it fails.

youch. Well, hopefully nothing is F’ed. it might have just been from sitting tht long. top off the tank and drive it, see if it starts freaking out. if no, you might be ok

That’s why I don’t give rides to siblings anymore. Too much hassle and they don’t appreciate it.

Up until today, there hadn’t been an issue with it. It hadn't shown any reason to need servicing and I didn't know when the last time it has been redone was.
![]() 06/25/2015 at 21:34 |

Topped it off and it drove home fine. So I honestly don't know if it was just a freak accident or what.

Parents don't give me much choice in that matter. I know they didn't appreciate sitting in the 90* heat for an hour while it cooled down. Tough tits for them though.
![]() 06/25/2015 at 21:38 |

Start demanding gas money then. If you’re doing your parents’ errands for them, you deserve it.

Yeah, I get what you mean, but those don’t always fail showing symptoms. Especially when it’s hot as balls outside. The plastic water pump in the E36 will fail without signs of weakness under hard driving. Better to just replace the cheap part before you need a new head gasket.
How many miles is the M3 at now? Probably would’ve been the first thing i did if I got the car with no idea whether it had been replaced or not. Especially if you’re well over 100k.
C’mon man, don't you wanna hit 200k??

From my 14 year old brother who doesn't have a job? Tough chance of that happening.

Holy cow. I’ve sat in my car with no issue for 45+ minutes just chilling and listening to music, idk about full blast AC tho. I see that all the time at festivals where you camp by your car, I had no idea it could be this dangerous
![]() 06/25/2015 at 21:40 |

I meant the parents. You’re essentially doing their errands for them.

I just rolled 170k. We would have changed it but we were more concerned with getting it on the road and we thought it was fine. I guess my trim can wait longer and well redo the cooling system.

Holy shit a 1/2 hour? What a madman!
![]() 06/25/2015 at 21:44 |

They already buy my gas so I’m being paid to run errands basically.

It was supposed to be 10 minutes, but practice ran over and I wasn't paying attention.

It was also almost 100 degrees out, if that makes a difference.

I did the 45+ min thing in AZ @116F. So not sure it does haha :) granted tho, it was night. So no sun

it just took up waayyyy too much heat. you might be fine. Just dont do it again XD
but, as others have mention, tht gen 3 series has known issues. Look into a water pump and what not sooner rather then later.
![]() 06/25/2015 at 22:04 |

Start buying your own gas so you can complain that you’re doing their errands for free.

It’s hillarious how some of these threads careen off topic.
I don’t think your car should have overheated. Perhaps you were low on coolant or there was an air pocket somewhere in the cooling system. Definitely have the water pump checked and make sure the radiator is healthy and happy.

Good old St. Louis heat. It’s been really shitty the past couple days.

A system of “A/C pre-cool” should be established. Every minute over 15 will incite in lost credits.

I hate this time of year here to be honest. Too damn hot and sticky

That’s no fun. Must be even worse with a black interior.
BTW be on the lookout for a brown and white flex to pop up near you. We have a very interested party in St. Louis.

Fair enough, I just am always an asshole and take the keys when my sister is in the car. Windows cracked of course.

“Is why you don’t sit with the car running for half an hour with the AC on full blast in 90+ degree heat.”
Funny, my car has no issue doing this. Lol german water pumps

It’s awful. I work at Waterway and spending 8 hours straight in the sun/humidity absolutely wore me out today.

This sucks. By the way, I love the Drivers door trim.

My AC took a dump too on Monday. I feel your pain.

Luckily the sun started hiding behind the clouds.
STL is a big place, but the flex is an uncommon car so I'll keep an eye out!

Oh hell, that must be horrible!
![]() 06/25/2015 at 22:57 |

Yeah, that was supposed to be the next purchase but I think a water pump is now.

Haha, just buy a King Size Sharpie for now. No one will notice from far away!

THAT WAS MY LINE!

Oddly enough when I got home from the gym I noticed my neighbor’s wife’s car (2010 Honda Accord Coupe) leaking a huge puddle that was turning into a stream in their driveway. I rang their bell and let them know that it looked like the coolant was leaking. Hope it’s an easy and cheap fix.

all of your M posts should just have this as a lede photo.

I would be surprised if there’s any significant damage. But it would be a good idea to replace at least the thermostat and reservoir whether they seem fine or not. Thermostats often fail after incidents like this and BMW reservoirs like to crack or explode just for fun.

Don’t worry. The A/C just “needs a charge” now.
